Abstract

The search for alternative sources of cellulose is justified by the high demand for this type of raw material. Cellulose obtained from plant wastes has great potential as an alternative to synthetic fibers and fillers. The aim of the present study was to investigate the extraction of cellulose from rice husk using chemical-thermal treatment. The extraction process of cellulose from rice husk was carried out in NaOH solution in which maceration of fibers takes place. The effects of concentration (2 M, 5 M, and 10 M), extraction time (60, 120, 180 min) and temperature 60, 90, 120 °C on the yield and structure of cellulose were investigated. The extracted cellulose fibers were characterized using EDRS analysis, optical and scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared analysis. Based on the fiber properties, it is expected that rice husk fibers may be suitable for use in various applications similar to the currently widely used cellulose fibers.
